Youth With A Mission is an international movement of Christians from many denominations dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced "WYE-wam"), our calling is to know God and to make Him known. Back when we began in 1960, our main focus was to get youth into short-term mission work and to give them opportunities to reach out in Jesus' name. Today, we still focus on youth, and we also involve people of almost every age (even many people who choose to spend their "retirement" in active service). Their many ministries fit into three main categories: evangelism, training and mercy ministry. They are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 149 countries, with a staff of nearly 16,000.

[edit] History

YWAM was begun by Loren Cunningham in 1960. It developed its first School of Evangelism in 1968 and its first Discipleship Training School (DTS) in 1970. YWAM, with 1,000 volunteers, led their first Olympic outreach in 1970 at the Olympic games in Munich.

The Mercy Ships ministry first seeded in 1973, MV Anastasis and the smaller MV Good Samaritan have an average of 600 personnel involved in discipling, Christian aid and mobile medical work.

1973 the University of the Nations was born in Hawaii. In 1978, King's Kids, a youth ministry, was launched.

YWAM is made up of over 1,000 bases worldwide. It is therefore difficult to give any comprehensive sense of where the bases are. If you add a base, please make sure to give it a distinct name and link to a subpage where the base can be described.
