On 1 February 2008 the international radio mission Trans World Radio (TWR) started to operate a new medium wave transmitters for francophone West Africa. For about 1.2 million Euros was this radio transmitter near the town of Parakou in Benin built. Of the approximately 7.5 million inhabitants of Benin are Animists 50%, Catholic 30%, Muslims 20%, Christians 10% (about 5% Evangelicals). The pagan voodoo cult is widespread. In 2003 the Christian's President Mathieu Kerekou had asked TWR for the construction of a broadcasting station and granted a license for a short-wave transmitter and medium wave transmitter. The station distributed Christian programs for the West Africa region. These include the nations of Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Togo. Among others, also a program, which help in dealing with and the prevention of HIV/AIDS. Most programs are in French, some in local languages.
