[edit] Geography
[edit] Location
- The Sultanate of Oman is a country in southwest Asia on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It borders the United Arab Emirates on the northwest, Saudi Arabia on the west and Yemen on the southwest. The coast is formed by the Arabian Sea on the south and east, and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast. The country also contains Madha, an enclave enclosed by the United Arab Emirates, and Musandam, an enclave also separated by Emirati territory. A vast desert plain covers most of central Oman, with mountain ranges along the north (Jebel Akhdar) and southeast coast, where the country's main cities are also located.

[edit] Peoples
- Mahra, they live on either side of the Yemen-Oman border. In Oman they live in the Hadramawt province.
- Oman - Arabs: They call themselves “Omani-Omanis” with a smile that means everything! This term sets them apart from Omanis who have a mixed bloodline from other backgrounds, including Baluchi, Persian or Zanzibari. They are proud of their pure Omani bloodline, cultural heritage and the form of Islam they follow. They think their Ibadi Islam is the only true form of Islam, and sadly, they also do not believe they will ever see Allah. In public, they walk with their heads held high, the men in crisp white gowns called dishdashas (perhaps not so crisp in rural areas, but no less proudly) and the Omani turban tied according to the region. The women wear flowing colourful dresses and matching head scarves, reminiscent of countries further east. Along with the modernization of the country and the opening up of opportunities for the fast-growing youth sector, many feel their heritage, culture, values and lifestyle are under siege. Materialism, personal ambition and individualism are flooding society. Internet, worldwide media via satellite TV, job opportunities, the hope of money and a better life, and growing interests in a more “western” lifestyle are causing strife between generations in traditional families.
- May the present transitions will lead Omanis to seek the Truth, and that they would find the freedom, in Jesus Christ, and the fullness of life that many seek.

[edit] Life
- Oman remained proactive in developing counter terrorism programs and strategies to ensure that it does not become a terrorist safe haven. Oman has worked extensively with neighbouring countries to delineate border regions to help prevent the ability of terrorists to move freely throughout the Arabian Peninsula. These efforts resulted in a December 2006 agreement between Oman and Saudi Arabia to establish a formal Port of Entry along Oman's western border to better control border transit operations between the two countries.
- Oil wealth, rising education levels and the opening up to the wider world have broadened the minds of Omanis. The younger generation in particular are outward looking and interested in new ideas. Pray that many may become receptive to spiritual change too. Though slavery was abolished many years ago there still remains a ‘spirit of slavery’ in attitudes, creating another obstacle to the gospel in the hearts of Omanis.

[edit] Government
- Oman has changed rapidly since the new Sultan took power in 1970. There is the need that the people in the country also adapt to new ideas and change, and that they would be open to spiritual change as well.
[edit] Religion
- Islam 92.7%, Hinduism 3%, Christianity 2.5%, Other 1.8%
[edit] Islam
- Oman is comprised of 92.7% Muslims. The state religion is Ibadi Islam and that Shari’a is the source of legislation. The Sultan is strictly opposed to any rise in extreme fanatical Islam.
[edit] Buddhism
[edit] Christianity
- Although telling Muslims about Jesus is strictly forbidden Christians from other countries are allowed to meet together to worship. Nearly all Christians in Oman are from other countries. In particular there are active churches that are seeing more and more Asians being saved. May the Christians in Oman be witness to Jesus love and life in all they do.
