[edit] Geography
[edit] Location
- Nigeria is a country in West Africa and the most populous country in Africa. Nigeria shares land borders with the Republic of Benin in the west, Chad and Cameroon in the east, and Niger in the north. Its coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south. Since 1991, its capital has been the centrally located city of Abuja; previously, the Nigerian government was head quartered in the coastal city, Lagos.

[edit] Peoples
- Gyeji, Animist - After hearing the message of Good News recordings (GRN) several times, eight people responded to the gospel.
- From the 20-million-strong Muslim Fulbe (Fulani, Fula, Peul) cluster live twelve million in Nigeria.

[edit] Life
- Culture of greed and corruption & wealth stolen by former leaders is about equal to the national debt of billion.
- Wide differences between feudal, Muslim north and entrepreneurial, largely Christian south. There are tension, violence, coups and civil war.
- The combined effects of ancient tribal hatreds, Muslim conquests, British colonial policy in which the North and South were handled differently and the bitter Biafra war of 1967-70 have left deep scars. Pray for unity, healing and reconciliation.
[edit] Economy
[edit] Government
- The elections in 2007 brought Umaru Yar'Adua, a Muslim, to the presidency amidst widespread allegations of vote rigging, pray for national unity and moral uprightness amongst the leadership.
[edit] Religion
- Christianity 52.6%, Islam 41%, Traditional 6%, Other 0.4%. There is a wide cultural difference between the Muslim north and largely Christian south. These differences have created tensions, which have escalated into violence and civil war. In many of the northern Muslim states, a strict Islamic Shari’a law was imposed in 2000 and Christians there face intense persecution.

[edit] Churches
- Spectacular Church growth & spirit of prayer among Christians. Nigerian Christians are passionate about praying ― some of the biggest prayer meetings in history have been in Nigeria. As many as 3 million people have come together to pray in the city of Lagos , that many people would fill 50 football stadiums.
[edit] Persecution
- Noting that Muslim leaders have preached attacks against Christians during Ramadan, Christian leaders in the area have raised a plea for the Nigerian government to act quickly to forestall what he and other Christian leaders said was a systematic effort to wipe out Christianity from northern Nigeria. Government efforts at curtailing the conflicts through the establishment of inter-religious councils and interfaith dialogues between Muslims and Christians have yielded little or no results, as attacks against Christians have continued unabated. Persecution in Nigeria’s northern states has led to the death of thousands of Christians and the destruction of church buildings. Pray that God would comfort all who have lost their families and suffered. Pray also that the spirit of forgiveness would be stronger than any feelings of revenge.
- Despite of much persecution there is an increase in prayer. Thank God for this. Nigerian Christians are passionate about praying ― some of the biggest prayer meetings in history have been in Nigeria. As many as three million people have come together to pray in the city of Lagos.

[edit] Mission
- One of the greatest gifts God has given to Nigeria is immense Human and Spiritual resources. It is unfair that in Nigeria, there are places where you find 20 churches in one street, 5 churches in one building while 27% of the world population has not heard the Gospel once. God has a mandate for the Nigerian church to rise up to its God given mandate and stop playing church.
- Nigeria has become one of the major missionary-sending countries with 4,500 missionaries working in more than 50 nations, with over 1,000 going outside Africa. See also Nigerian Evangelical Missions Association.
