LIFE & LIBERTY
HDI

Beautiful vistas of the Indian Ocean along the southern coast and mountainous grandeur along its western and northern borders belie the poverty, years of war and recurring famine that are characteristic of Mozambique. Despite its natural beauty and coastal location, Mozambique remains one of the poorest countries in the world.

Following colonial rule by Portugal, Mozambique gained independence in 1975. For 15 years, civil war ravaged the country, leaving the infrastructure and economy severely damaged. The country remains divided by ethnic groups, although efforts to reunify have made progress in recent years. Mozambique has also suffered a long drought and subsequent famine, followed by periods of extensive flooding. Combined with the legacy of war, these natural disasters have left Mozambique struggling to care for its own.

  • 23 May 2008 neighbouring Mozambique declared a state of emergency to help its citizens fleeing the attacks in South Africa, warning the "exodus will worsen" as thousands are still housed in makeshift camps awaiting transport back home.
  • Report from a victim of the violence in South Africa: "I am experiencing nightmares every day now. Each time I close my eyes, I see my three friends being butchered in cold blood. The four of us were asleep when some thugs started attacking us. I survived through faking death. I smeared my friend's blood on my chest, mouth and nose, to fool them. They only left after being convinced we were all dead. I'm not going to risk my life again. South Africa was good for us, but I will never set my foot in Johannesburg again. I now hate South Africans."

  • Mozambique emerged broken and wounded from colonialism and 15 years of civil war. Intense suffering created spiritual hunger and congregations of indigenous Christians mushroomed. Most congregations are led by men and women with little or no education, and very few by those with theological training of any kind. Training of church leadership is therefore an urgent priority. Pray for those providing and those receiving training, lecturers and students, that the church might be strengthened in its mission and witness.
