[edit] Islam
- The Islamic faith is a powerful force in Malawi, while not the dominant, and is very vocal in government and society. Much Islamic activity is being propagated, especially in areas where the Yao people live. Islamic schools, charities and places of worship can be found nationwide and is always growing in part due to the financial assistance of Islamic foreign charities, governments and local prominent Muslims. The Muslims Association of Malawi (MAM) is among the most well known organizations that try to assist in informing the public about Islam.
[edit] Buddhism
- Buddhism is virtually unknown is this African nation, though there is at least one Buddhist orphanage that has been set up thanks to the efforts of a Taiwanese group. However, in 2007 and 2008 China became the main trading partner with Malawi and Taiwan was forced to leave. Some Buddhist efforts left with the Taiwanese.
[edit] Christianity
- Christianity is the main religion of Malawi and has been widely adopted by the Chewa and Tumbuka peoples of the country.

[edit] Mission
- Presbyterian missions began in 1875.
[edit] Broadcasting
- Christian programming is available in local languages through the efforts of FEBA and Trans World Radio. TWR is available in the main cities and is responsible for much of the Chichewa material broadcast, while FEBA concentrates on programming for the Ciyawo (Chiyao) language which is spoken by the Yao people (the majority of which are Muslim).

[edit] Challenges for the Christian Church
- The growth of Islam is a major challenge. Over 90% of the Yao are Muslim and constitute the bulk of Muslims in Malawi. The majority of the Asians are also Muslim, as is the President himself. The Qur’an has been translated into Chewa. Islam has become more visible and confident and Muslim aid projects have increased. Malawi is now the Southern African base for the Africa Muslim Agency. Expansion of Islam to other peoples is not extensive yet but is taking place. Pray for good relations between Christians and Muslims and for an effective ministry to bring Muslims to a personal relationship with Christ.
