- Colonial importation of labour has created the present racial diversity: East Indian 50%, Africans 36%, Amerindians 7%,East Asians and Chinese,Europeans, mixed race. Most of Guyana’s 767,000 people live along the Atlantic coast. South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis and Afghans) make up the majority of Muslims in Guyana (more than 75,000 people). Like the Africans who came as slaves most of Guyana’s ethnic groups were labourers brought into the country to work on sugar and cotton plantations with the exception of the Amerindians. South Asians from largely Hindus and Muslim backgrounds make up 51% of the population. “Whites” and Chinese, make up less than 2% percent of the population. Over 500,000 Guyanese have emigrated to other countries including the United States, Canada, England, Suriname and Trinidad & Tobago.

[edit] Life
- The country is plagued with AIDS, unemployment, debt. Estimates of the population for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality and death rates, lower population and growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected (July 2007 est.)

[edit] Government
- Guyana’s integrity as a state is threatened by conflicts with Venezuela and Suriname over both land and maritime borders and by inter-racial tensions internally. Pray that both the present and future governments may roll back decades of societal polarization and bring about a society that is fair to all its citizens and gives hope for the future.

- Inter-racial tensions and growing evangelical witness. Some multi-racial congregations are the only bridge in a divided society.
