[edit] Christianity

  • Since independence in 1991, interest in spiritual things and the Christian faith in particular has increased greatly. The former Department of Atheism at the national university is now a theological faculty. Christian groups of all expressions are experiencing growth in this nation. Praise God!
  • In this country there are only 100 different Christian books, 70% of them is study material for Christian workers.

[edit] Mission

  • Azerbaijani, mainly Muslim: The Bible and the Jesus film are available in the Azerbaijani language but the Good News needs to be shared in culturally effective ways with an emphasis on discipleship.
  • Pray for the continuing witness of the Bible Centre in Tiblisi, the capital of Georgia. The Bible Society has a desire and mission to see more of the scriptures in the hands of the people of Georgia.
  • Georgian believers are best placed to reach ethnic minorities but need sensitivity and encouragement in doing so. Lack of resources and expectations of foreign funds hold back local initiatives. Pray for these believers and that they might have a burden for these peoples.
  • Muslim Abhazians and Ossettian who are minorities within their ethnic groups need to be reached with the gospel. Both peoples have been embroiled with the Georgian government in bitter wars of secession. Pray that a witness to the gospel might become established among these minority people groups.
