[edit] Flooding
A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land. It is usually due to the volume of water within a body of water, such as a river or lake, exceeding the total capacity of the body, and as a result some of the water flows or sits outside of the normal perimeter of the body. It can also occur in rivers, when the strength of the river is so high it flows right out of the river channel. Flooding can turn even the most harmless looking watercourse into a raging torrent of large-scale destruction - buildings may prove no obstacle to its power; food crops may be ruined leading to food shortages and even starvation; peoples lives may be lost through drowning, disease, and homelessness. Floods from the sea can cause overflow of flood defences like dikes as well as flattening of dunes. Land behind the coastal defence may be inundated or experience damage. A flood from sea may be caused by a heavy storm, a high tide, a tsunami, or a combination thereof.

[edit] Flooding in Bangladesh:
- 15 September 2007: Two thirds of the nation is under water following torrential rains and some 8 million people have been affected. The death toll from flooding this year in impoverished Bangladesh crossed 1,000 on Saturday, September 15, 2007 with an additional 2.5 million people displaced or marooned by rising river waters. Abnormally early and heavy monsoon rains have caused this flooding. The rains have destroyed one complete crop season, where the main livelihood is agriculture and the people are waiting for food and medicine.
