English is a language spoken by over 300 million mother-tongue speakers around the world (2000, Ethnologue), and over 500 million when second-language speakers are included. The language developed in England. There are several dialects (e.g. American English, British English, Australian English, etc.) which in many cases may not be readily understood by each other.
