The heavy snowstorms and excessive frost in China has destroyed about one tenth of the country's forest area. This represents more than 17 million hectares, as the daily newspaper "China Daily", relying on information from the authorities reported. In some areas up to 90 percent of the forest was destroyed by the snowstorms and excessive frost. In the coming months the areas are threatened by forest fires, because the dead trees are easily flammable. In April, Chinese authorities said they would begin reforestation and a total of 2.5 billion new trees will be planted.
