Phnom Penh capital city

[edit] Life

  • The terrible genocide of 1975-79 in which nearly 2 million were killed has left deep physical and emotional scars. There are over 30,000 who have lost limbs to landmines, and almost the entire population needs deep healing from the trauma of their losses and suffering. The spiritual darkness of Cambodia must be lifted by prayer. The Cambodian Church has survived against all the odds.
  • There are people who are seeking to remove mines and restore the country to a decent living standard. Many Christian NGOs are involved.
  • There are people who are caring for the maimed, the orphans, widows, and now AIDS victims.
  • Those born before the Khmer Rouge holocaust are now outnumbered by those born since. Many in Cambodia have a scant understanding of what happened. A new section about Pol Pot's regime was to be included in textbooks but this had to be withdrawn on grounds of 'accuracy complaints.' The Khmer Rouge Tribunal is taking place right now. May peace prevail throughout the country.
  • The sex industry in Cambodia is growing ― a third of all prostitutes are children. Pray for God to break through this industry and deliver child prostitutes.

[edit] Economy

  • Major economic activities include receiving international aid, pornography, prostitution, drugs, and illegal logging.
  • Cambodia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Most of the population work as subsistence farmers, growing rice and other crops in the fertile soil along the Mekong River. Unfortunately, the rice crop is often not enough to sustain a farming family for the whole year. Moreover, erosion and flooding are becoming increasingly problematic and pose threats to the farming community.

[edit] Government

  • May King Shiamoni and others of influence have courage and strength to encourage justice and speak out against corruption. May Hun Sen, the Prime Minister, make wise decisions, govern Cambodia with integrity and grant complete freedom to share the Gospel. Violence, manipulation, graft and selfishness hitherto have been the rule.
  • The international tribunal for the ex-Khmer Rouge leaders responsible for the genocide in the 1970s is soon (September 07 ?) to take place. May peace be in the country during the trial.
  • National elections will take place on 27 July. A senior member of the National Assembly suffered an acid attack and is currently in Thailand receiving treatment. The last election was peaceful because Christians all over Cambodia prayed. We need to pray for peace from now till at least a month after the elections. Pray for God's choice of leadership, who will govern the nation in justice, righteousness and integrity. Pray for voters to vote wisely.

[edit] Religion

[edit] Islam

[edit] Buddhism

  • Cambodia is over 82% Buddhist, and Buddhism has been the national religion since the 15th century. Nearly 90% of all Buddhist monks were murdered by the Khmer Rouge (along with about equal numbers of Christians) following the communist takeover in 1975. Nevertheless the country remains dominated by its Buddhist heritage: spirit houses are everywhere, and many Buddhist temples are considered archaeological treasures and heritage sites. Today Buddhism is struggling to re-establish itself although the lack of Buddhist scholars and leaders and the continuing political instability are making the task difficult.

[edit] Christianity

[edit] History

[edit] Churches

  • Every week an evangelical church is started. Cambodia has more than 2000 churches. Pray that the Spirit will stir the churches with a passion for following Jesus. Pray for unity to prevail in this country where division and lack of trust is strongly present.

[edit] Mission and Evangelization

  • In the north there is a need for more workers for the church-planting teams there.
  • The Bridge of Hope is a ministry of WEC Cambodia, reaching out to children on the streets and in the slums of Phnom Penh. WEC has set up a small sponsorship programme. The parents sign a contract in which they agree to send the child to school rather than to work. Christians overseas are showing much interest in sponsoring children, but our goal is to encourage local churches to be actively involved. Do stand with us in prayer as we seek to see many more young lives cross over into a safe and bright future.
  • A number of young people from Bang Tapon slum on the outskirts of Phnom Penh city are regularly attending a Saturday night youth meeting. Pray for the staff at The Bridge of Hope as they encourage those young boys and girls to keep on following the Lord in spite of their hard living conditions.
  • WEC Cambodia's Vocational Training Apprenticeship Programme trains young people in IT and tailoring and has some young people training in their Metal Trade workshop. The trainees are trained in trade skills and discipled as they work together with their trainers.
